Penn State Basketball: Anderson Hoping For One Final Reunion
You never really lose the itch to play.
And neither has Penn State assistant basketball coach Dwayne Anderson.
Anderson, who joined Penn State's staff this past season, is hoping for one final reunion with his college team and a chance to win a 32 team single-elimination tournament in Philadelphia.
But Anderson isn't trying to bring the troops back together from some unknown state school. He's calling together the majority of Villanova's 2009 Final Four squad. Anderson was a key member of that team.
"We decided to enter the tournament because me and some of the Nova guys discussed having a final four reunion," Anderson said. "Reuniting on the basketball court just seemed like the perfect idea."
So far Anderson has succeeded in his quest to pull together a reunion team -- Mouphtaou Yarou, Maalik Wayns, Corey Fisher, Scottie Reynolds, Antonio Pena, Reggie Redding, Dante Cunningham, and Anderson are all on the roster. It's a formidable lineup of talent that boasts NBA and European experience with plenty of time playing together already.
The catch? Even with the team together and ready to go, the reunion still has to qualify for the tournament by collecting fans on a social media page affiliated with the tournament. The top 24 teams will be selected automatically and then 8 more teams will be selected by tournament officials. So far Anderson and Co (Team Roby) come in at No.15 in the Top 24 but fans can still join their efforts here.
"Team Roby: Rock Out Be You is a clothing brand that me and a very good friend of mine for several years started," Anderson said. "ROBY will be appearing in a store close to Penn State in the near future. Still have to work out some details but that’s the plan. It feels good to get back on the court with the final four 2009 crew, that was a special year for me and the other guys. Something that no one can take away from us. Hopefully in this tournament we can go on another run."
Applications for the tournament close on May 1, and the teams will be selected on May 8.
So it's only a matter of days before Anderson finds out if he can scratch that itch again.
