Penn State Basketball: Battle Eyeing Return To State College

One of the best to ever do it at Penn State might be landing back in Happy Valley according to Nittany Lion coach Patrick Chambers.

“Talor and I have gotten very close over the last couple of years,” Chambers said of Talor Battle, the program's all-time leading scorer. “So close that he might even join us this year in some capacity. You know, that consultant role. To be that outreach for the community and former players. Help fundraise. Things of that nature.”

For Battle it's a chance to return home to a program he helped lead to an NIT Championship and the Nittany Lions' most recent NCAA Tournament appearance.

Recently retired from a long overseas career, in large part due to injuries, Battle isn't sure what's next for him just yet, but if it's going to be basketball, it'll be back in State College.

“It’s the only thing I’ve ever done,” he said of being involved with the sport. “So I know I’ve got some knowledge. I played here and I played at this level, so with the kids coming up, I feel like I’ve got a lot to share and give back to them.”

As far as Chambers, it's a chance to continue to foster a relationship with another former player from a different era. If Friday afternoon's Coaches Vs Cancer golf tournament was a display of anything, it was that of a growing community of former players over the span of many different coaches.

“To have a great relationship with your all-time leading scorer and one of the best players ever to come out of Penn State is really important,” Chambers said Friday. “It was important for me when I took the job. I met him early. When I first took the job, he was still around. So I was able to build that relationship. And then we really wanted to stay in touch with him."

And if Battle makes the call and finds his way into the Bryce Jordan Center again, there will be plenty of Big Ten coaches who are glad he isn't suiting up when it comes time to play the game.
