Penn State Basketball: Chambers Extension On The Way

Penn State men's basketball coach Patrick Chambers is getting a contract extention, just not yet according to both he and athletic director Sandy Barbour.

"He deserves the extension we're talking about." Barbour told reporters on Thursday. She added that she believed that Chambers had earned the contract renewal following the conclusion of the regular season, regardless of what postseason opportunities were presented.

As for Chambers, "We're working out a few things." he said of the negotiations.

Chambers, who was hired in 2011 is coming off a a 26-13 season that featured an NIT title. This upcoming season would have marked the final year of his previous contract.

Penn State's 9-9 record in Big Ten this past season is the first under Chambers at .500 or above in conference play. A sixth place finish in the Big Ten is the best under Chambers. A 10th place finish in 2015-16 was the previous high, the Nittany Lions have won 15 or more games in five straight seasons.

The Nittany Lions will be without star guard Tony Carr after Carr announced earlier in the month that he will be pursuing an NBA career, hiring an agent, which makes him ineligible to return to Penn State per NCAA rules.

Penn State will look to the returning trio of Lamar Stevens, Josh Reaves and Mike Watkins moving forward. Freshmen Rasir Bolton and Myles Dread will join the Nittany Lions this summer. Penn State is expected to add a transfer to the ranks as well.
