Penn State men's basketball is expected to be on the lookout for a new assistant coach pending an announcement by UConn men's basketball that it has hired Kevin Freeman from Nittany Lion coach Pat Chambers' staff. The news was first reported by Rivals.

Freeman, a four-year starter at UConn from 1995-2000 won a national championship with the Huskies in 1999 and was named the Big East Tournament MVP that year. Freeman would eventually return to UConn following a long professional career to serve in an administrative role before  joining Chambers' staff heading into the 2018-19 season.

Freeman was the direct replacement for former Penn State assistant Dwayne Anderson who is now the director of operations at Villanova.

"It’s never goodbye... it’s see you later," Chambers said in a tweet on Wednesday. "Congrats and Good Luck to Coach Kevin Freeman his wife Nicole and their three amazing kids as he heads back to his Alma Mater UConn."

Freeman had a fairly successful tenure at Penn State, in particular working with big men Mike Watkins and John Harrar during the Nittany Lions' successful 2019-20 campaign.

Chambers will continue to lean on longtime assistant Keith Urgo and veteran coach Jim Ferry as the trio look to find fourth member of the core staff alongside longtime staff member and director of operations Ross Condon.
