by on February 13, 2017 3:18 PM

Penn State's youth movement hasn't gone unnoticed, and neither has good basketball as Nittany Lion freshman Lamar Stevens was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week after leading Penn State to a pair of back-to-back wins last week.

Stevens was a key component in Penn State's 70-64 victory over No. 21 Maryland, and then again as Penn State took care of Illinois, 83-70, on the road Saturday.

Over the two-game span Stevens utilized a solid mid-range game and physical play around the hoop to average 23 points and six rebounds in the two victories. Penn State is now 6-7 on the year in Big Ten play, and the Lions are on the road Wednesday night against Nebraska.

Against Maryland, Stevens posted 25 points on 8-of-13 shooting, making 8-of-12 free throws to go with seven rebounds, an assist and a team-high three steals.

Days later Stevens followed up the performance with 23 points, five rebounds and two assists in Penn State's second victory over Illinois this season.

Stevens has scored 20 points in three of the last four games and has five 20-point games this season. He is second on the team in scoring and rebounds with 12.3 ppg and 5.7 rpg on the year.

Mike Watkins earned freshman of the week honors twice this season, the first time a Penn State player has taken home the honor. Michigan State and Iowa are the only two Big Ten programs with multiple players winning freshman honors this season.
