Penn State Basketball: Mavericks Sign Josh Reaves To Two-Way Deal

Former Penn State guard Josh Reaves has agreed to a two-way contract to join the Dallas Mavericks. The news was announced early Friday morning following Thursday's NBA Draft.

A two-way deal allows a signee to spend up to 45 days with their respective NBA team (Although no time is a guaranteed in the deal) and the rest of their season with a G-League affiliate. NBA teams are allocated a 16th an 17th roster spot for two-way players according to the most recent collective bargaining agreement. A player who spends all 45 days at the NBA level will make $279,000.

“This means so much to me, knowing all the hard work I have put in throughout middle school, high school and college, it’s all paying off,” said Reaves in a press release. “I went into all my workouts with the mentality of putting my head down and showcasing my abilities, athletically and how I developed over time. I know it’s not the end of the journey; I know the hard work is not going to stop by any means. This is a step in the right direction. I’m really blessed to have this opportunity and going to try to make the most of it.”

A heart-and-soul player for the Nittany Lions, Reaves scored 1,079 career points, collected 540 rebounds and had 310 assists to go along with his 250 total steals as a Nittany Lion, one of only two players in Penn State history to compile such totals.

In his final home game this past season, Reaves scored a career-best 26 points and collected 11 rebounds vs. Illinois.

“There has never been any question in my mind that Josh (Reaves) could play at the professional level,” said coach Pat Chambers. “He has the athleticism, skills and mindset to be a contributor for any team and have a long and prosperous career. We’re extremely proud of him.”

The 2019 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year ended his career second on Penn State's all-time steals chart with 250 and ranks seventh on the Big Ten career list for that stat category. As a junior and senior, he was selected as a member of the Big Ten’s All-Defensive team (2018, 2019).

Reaves joins a host of players signed to two-way deals following the draft by the Mavericks. Purdue-Fort Wayne’s John Konchar, West Virginia forward Sagaba Konate and Buffalo product C.J. Massinburg were also inked Friday morning.

NBA Summer League begins July 5 and goes until July 15.
