Penn State Basketball: Moore Growing As Minutes Increase

by on February 16, 2016 2:00 PM

With all of the exciting guard play in the program already and headed into the program in the coming years, it can be easy to forget about he big guys.

But don't.

Especially Julian Moore.

At 6-10, Moore is already turning into something special to watch athletically. Sure he doesn't have everything figured out just yet and as only a sophomore there is still plenty of room to grow. Even so, it's hard to ignore the flashes he can show on the offensive end. A few mid range shots here, a nifty move under the basket there. If you're looking for glimpses of potential, there is plenty to see.

The biggest contributing factor to all of this? More minutes. Simply put, playing more helps Moore. Practice makes perfect but the money gets made when the lights are shining down.

On the year Moore is averaging 4.6 points and 3.7 rebounds a contest. Far from anything to raise an eyebrow at, but for six games of conference play Moore has seen his minutes rise above the 20 mark. On four occasions he has doubled his average production in points and has stayed on par with the rest of his numbers.

"I'm still trying to figure it all out, but yea it definitely helps out," Moore said of his increasing minutes helping his confidence. "My consistency," He added when asked about what is left to improve. "I'm trying to get better game by game but I think at the same time I need to get more consistent on the floor. Just my effort and playing hard, I've been focusing on bringing more energy to the team and to the game."

Up from his original 210 pounds, Moore sits at 235 with plenty more room to grow.

Right now though it's about getting his feet wet and getting valuable time when the games matter the most.

"(He's) so much better, he's getting the minutes, he's playing harder, he's doing some great things," Coach Pat Chambers said this week. "These are critical minutes that will help him down the stretch here and beyond."

Next up, No. 4 Iowa, a team which Moore scored 8 points, had 4 rebounds and 2 blocks against. Not a bad step forward.

But just one of many left to take.
