Penn State Basketball: Nittany Lions Add 2017 Forward In Buttrick

by on February 08, 2017 11:21 PM

Penn State basketball has picked up what could very well be the only commitment in the 2017 recruiting cycle as Pennsylvania native and Naples, Fla. forward Trent Buttrick verbally committed on Wednesday night.

The  6-foot-8, 210 pound Buttrick  had received offers from Air Force and Charlotte but is largely an unscouted talent when it comes to recruiting websites. He is a native of Bloomsburg, Pa., who has spent the past two years at The Community School prep school in Naples.

While the commitment may seem out of the ordinary for an otherwise dynamite set of recruiting classes for Penn State it actually makes sense. The Nittany Lions currently have one verbal commitment already for the 2018 class with three more scholarships to use as it stands today. Pat Chambers and his staff entered 2017 with just a single scholarship, something that could change in the offseason, but seems unlikely too. Chambers had said previously that the scholarship would be used if the right situation came about.

So Buttrick fits the mold. At 6-8 and with a fair amount of athleticism he joins a team with players in front of him and more on the way. It puts Buttrick in a low-pressure environment to develop and grow behind players a few years into the system. Penn State's 2018 class was never going to be five players deep so it's a low risk investment bring in size and skill that is bookended by more established prospects.

That's not to say fans should write off Buttrick's potential. Chambers and his staff have had a good eye for talent and big men have developed nicely in recent years under Dwayne Anderson.
