Penn State Basketball: Nittany Lions Beat Iowa 77-73 To Open Big Ten Play

Iowa had beaten Penn State 12 straight times in Iowa City and on Saturday night it looked like the Hawkeyes were closing in on making it 13 as the Nittany Lions leaned on the ropes.

But it never happened, free throws, clutch baskets and a dunk by Mike Watkins sealed the deal as the Nittany Lions beat Iowa 77-73 to open Big Ten play at 1-0 and improve to 7-2 on the year.

For the second straight game the Nittany Lions opened the night hot with an 11-2 run. Iowa would respond cutting the lead to just five by the half as Penn State cooled and struggled with foul trouble on the defensive end of the court. Even so the Nittany Lions were more than happy to take a 39-34 margin in the break.

The second half was more of the same as Iowa chased down a Penn State team that continued to respond to each Hawkeye score with one of its own to stay ahead. Lamar Stevens paced Penn State with 22 point as Tony Carr, Mike Watkins and Shep Garner added 16, 19 and 12 points respectively.

And with just nine seconds to go Carr stood at the line with his team ahead by two, and drained two free throws to put the Hawkeyes away, turning that streak of 12 straight losses to the start of what Penn State will hope becomes a winning streak.

Penn State will head back home to face Wisconsin. The Badgers lost by 25 to Ohio State at Kohl Center.
