Penn State Basketball: Nittany Lions Cruise In Opening Game of European Tour

by on August 13, 2013 10:25 AM

Tim Frazier hasn't played a competitive basketball game in almost 10 months but one dunk and a floater through traffic put any worries to rest that the fifth year senior had lost his step.

Playing Monday in Aalst, Belgium the Nittany Lion basketball team kicked off its European tour with a resounding 110-64 victory over Okapi Aalstar juniors on Monday night at Generali Forum. Frazier completed his return outing with 10 points while freshman guard Graham Woodward led all scorers with 18 points.  Seven Nittany Lions finished in double figures.

Penn State opened a 33-9 lead after the opening frame and never looked back. Penn State continued to pressure Aalstar into the second quarter with man-to-man defense. Freshmen guard tandem of Geno Thorpe and Woodward forced a handful of key turnovers that led to points on the other end including an alley-oop from Thorpe to Travis. The junior forward capped the half with 14 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field.

Sophomore Brandon Taylor added in 15 points, a good sign for the Nittany Lions after Taylor has spent the offseason losing weight and retooling his body. Ross Travis added 14 points, picking up where he left the 2012-13 season off.

Senior transfer guard (Miami,Ohio) Allen Roberts and D.J. Newbill scored 13 and 11 points, respectively. For Penn State, Roberts will fill the role of Jermaine Marshall who graduated and decided to forgo his final season at Penn State. Freshman Julian Moore added 10 points of his own as well.

Penn State travels north to Antwerp Tuesday for another 2:30 p.m. ET tip-off, this time facing off against St Jan of the Belgian Second Division.
