Penn State Basketball: Nittany Lions Reportedly Set To Face Duke In Early Season Tournament

by on April 04, 2016 2:15 PM

Penn State basketball will get a chance to face one of the nation's premiere programs as the Nittany Lions are reportedly set to face the Duke Blue Devils in the 2016 Hall-Of-Fame Tipoff Classic in Connecticut according to a CBS report.

The Tipoff Classic field was reportedly released months ago, including Penn State, Duke, Rhode Island, Cincinnati and four other schools, but has yet to be officially announced. Similarly Penn State has yet to confirm the early season tournament appearance.

Duke will be the highest profile out of conference opponent the Nittany Lions have played since Penn State faced off against No. 2 Kentucky in 2011 en route to a 85-47 loss to the Wildcats. Somewhat amazingly Penn State held future NBA All-Star Anthony Davis and NBA product Michael Kidd-Gilchrist to just six points in the game while NBA bound guard Doron Lamb torched the Nittany Lions for 26 points.

Penn State's 2016-17 non conference schedule is nearing competition according to coach Patrick Chambers and will challenge a crop of new faces early and often. The Nittany Lions welcome the No. 16 ranked recruiting class in the nation to campus this summer. Duke will introduce the No. 2 rated class in the nation to campus this fall including top prospect Harry Giles.

The Nittany Lions are 1-8 all-time against the Blue Devils but haven't faced Duke since 1970.

Grand Canyon is the only other team known to be on Penn State's out of conference schedule so far.
