Penn State Basketball: Nittany Lions Roll 84-46 To Open Season

by on November 05, 2019 9:00 PM

Penn State basketball took care of business on opening night with a commanding 84-46 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore. The Nittany Lions started off strong and never really looked back despite a cold spell at the midway point of the first half.

The Nittany Lions are now 1-0 on the year.

How It Happened:

Penn State went up 20 by the half and never really looked back. The Nittany Lions had strong showings from Lamar Stevens (17 points in 20 minutes) and Mike Watkins (12 points, 11 rebounds, seven blocks) while the rest of the contributing cast added plenty along the way. Myles Dread was five of six from beyond the arc for 15 points. All told the Nittany Lions had moments of rust but otherwise looked the better team from start to finish.

With just under eight minutes to play Penn State and Pat Chambers went to the bench ahead by 48 points giving Maryland Eastern Shore a bit more breathing room to score.

Tuesday evening was a good opening night showing by a Penn State team eager to get back on the court after a long offseason. The Nittany Lions shot 50% from the field on the night going 12-of-31 from beyond the arc.

It Was Over When:

Pretty much as soon as Mike Watkins scored to open the game. The Nittany Lions were stronger, faster and more athletic than the visitors and there was no real point during Tuesday's game when that was in question. Maryland Eastern Shore hung around in the middle of the first half but that was more a product of a brief cold spell by Penn State than anything else. This was an opening night victory like they're supposed to unfold.

Play Of The Game:

Jamari Wheeler bounced the ball off the backboard to give Lamar Stevens an easy dunk and his second in as many possession to put Penn State up 51-19.

Wheeler later chased down a transition opportunity to poke the ball free up 40 points, a great hustle play and tone-setter even with the game well in hand.

Stat Of The Game:

Mike Watkins had a 12 points, 11 rebound and seven block outing after an updated box score, just four shy of the program's single-game record in just 20 minutes of action.

Penn State also racked up 22 second-chance points and 19 assists on 29 made baskets. The Nittany Lions also scored 30 points off the bench.

Quote Of The Game:

"We have nine more of these, pray for us." Maryland Eastern Shore's coach.

Up Next:

The Nittany Lions take the court this Saturday at 4:00 p.m. against Wagner for the second game of the season. Penn State will travel to face Georgetown the following Thursday.
