Penn State and Michigan State will take the court Wednesday night in East Lansing for the only regular season meeting between the two teams.
Michigan State (18-5) is coming off a 64-54 victory over No. 23 Michigan in East Lansing on Sunday. The Spartans, whose +10.5 rebounding margin is good enough for third in the country, dominated the glass against the Wolverines to the tune of 40-16 behind 16 rebounds and 14 points from senior Draymond Green.
Green leads the Big Ten with 10.5 rebounds per game and also averages 14 points per game. He along with Keith Appling (11.9 ppg and 3.8 apg) will be the focus of a complete team effort by Penn State.
"We can't expect one guy to take on (Green)," Pat Chambers said. "We're out there to play as a five man team. Everybody needs to help on another out."
Michigan State comes in to Wednesday's contest 14-0 at home on the year and a game out of first in the Big Ten with a 7-3 conference record. Michigan State leads the Big Ten with 39.9 rebounds and 16.2 assists per game and is second to Penn State in offensive rebounding.
Penn State has won two of the last three meetings with MSU including a 61-48 victory in last year’s Big Ten Tournament semifinal . The Spartans lead the series 29-7 overall and are 18-1 in East Lansing, with Penn State’s only win coming in 2009. Penn State is still looking for their first road win in the Big Ten this season.
While the Nittany Lion's last meeting with Michigan State featured what was then Tim Frazier's career high 22 points, Frazier has yet to score a basket in East Lansing and only three players on Penn State's roster have ever scored points in Michigan State's home arena. The last game between these two teams in the Breslin Center featured a Spartan team that shot 59% from the floor and 5-of-8 from three in the first half to jump to a 41-21 halftime lead.
For Penn State, a good first four minutes will be crucial to staying in a game against one of the nation's elite teams. If the Nittany Lions start flat and struggle to hit shots, it may be another difficult road loss for Penn State fans to watch.
