Penn State Basketball: Return To Rec Live Blog

For the first time in almost two decades Penn State will take to Rec Hall for a basketball game. The Nittany Lions are 514-183 in the building and will look to make it win No. 515 as Penn State faces Princeton at 2:00 PM on the Big Ten Network.

The Tigers enter the game 7-1 on the year, having only lost to Butler 70-67 in the second game of the season. Princeton is a balanced offensive team but average only 72 points a game while the Nittany Lions have broken the 80 point mark on mutiple occasions. T.J. Bray leads the Tigers with 16 points per game.

Tip is set for 2:00 on the Big Ten Network, but we'll keep you covered with updates at each timeout and as they're needed throughout the game.


The crowd continues to file in as teams take the court. Penn State will wear retro uniforms. Intro video features great games, concerts, and speakers who have been a part of Rec Hall history. And yes, it is loud.


Princeton wins the opening tip and we're underway here at Rec Hall. The Tigers get the opening basket in front of Penn State head coach Bill O'Brien. Tim Frazier works in transition and forces an And-1 basket. Penn State goes up 3-2 after the free throw. Both teams continue to get accumulated to the crowd and the rims but Penn State is up 7-4.


Penn State is up 7-4 at the under-16 timeout with 15:36 to go in the game. A Tim Frazier three was close to dropping but Brandon Taylor interfered with the basket negating the shot. Both teams are 2-of-7 from the floor as they settle into the game.


Both teams continue to settle down but Penn State is now up 9-8 and DJ Newbill will head to the line. Princeton is shooting 4-13 from the field, Penn State 3-of-9. Tim Frazier leads all scorers with 5 points.


DJ Newbill and Tim Frazier both are starting to find their game and Penn State leads 17-11. Princeton hits its first three of the game after going 0-8 from beyond the arc early. The Tigers call a quick timeout following the basket.


Newbill now has 12 points but some defensive lapses by Penn State on the back-door have led to a few easy baskets for Princeton. Penn State is now up 25-17 but neither team has really found its stride at this point of the game.


Penn State is now 52-percent from the floor. And it shows on the scoreboard as the Nittany Lions are now up 33-18. DJ Newbill has 14 points and Tim Frazier has pitched in 8 and 3 assists. Penn State with only three assists as the offense has been able to score with one-on-one plays.

Halftime: Penn State leads 35-23

Neither team played a great half, but Penn State round into form to open up a 12 point halftime lead behind DJ Newbill and Tim Frazier's strong effort. Ross Travis also added 9 points and 6 rebounds.


Princeton opens the second half with the ball but can't score. Ross Travis adds another basket and rebound to his name.


Penn State continues to rebound well and prevent many Princeton second chances and the Nittany Lions are now up 44-26. With 11 points, Ross Travis is now a rebound from a double-double.


Back and forth action but Princeton can't get the shots the fall as Penn State takes a 47-31 lead. Princeton is shooting 28-percent from the field while Penn State is just below 50-percent on the day.


Penn State continues to lead and Princeton finally makes a three to cut the lead to 51-36. Penn State is shooting 50-percent from the field. DJ Newbill has 18 points, Frazier and Travis with 14 and 11 respectively.


Pat Chambers calls a timeout after Princeton goes on a run to cut the lead to only 10 at 60-50 in the game's final stages. DJ Newbill now has 20 points. Ross Travis dunks coming out of the timeout putting Penn State back up 12.


Tim Frazier will head to the line as both teams trade misses following Travis' dunk. Penn State has shot 9 free throws all game.


Princeton makes two three-pointers in three possessions and Penn State can't buy a basket. The Nittany Lions lead 64-58.


Penn State now only up three with 24.2 to go in the game. Travis make one of two free throws to make it a three point game. Back on the other end Princeton cuts the lead to 1 with 16.5 to go. Penn State loses the rebound and Princeton will head to the line for the tie down 2.

With the game tied and 13 seconds to play Penn State will inbound. Fraizer's three is no good and we're headed to overtime.


Princeton takes a  four point lead and both teams trade baskets as Penn State is now down 2, 71-69 with 2:19 to go.

A Tim Frazier basket makes it a four-point game with 1:19 to go.

Penn State down 5 with 30 seconds to play.

Penn State down 1 with 10.7 to go. Princeton ball.

Penn State down 2 with 2.5 to go. Penn State ball.

Tim Frazier falls up just short on a layup attempt and Penn State falls.
