Penn State Basketball: Second Half Rally Not Enough, Lions Lose To Michigan State 77-57

by on February 08, 2012 8:40 PM

Tim Frazier led Penn State with 19 points and 7 assists but it wasn't enough as a hot shooting Spartan team pulled away from the Nittany Lions late winning 77-57.

After being down by as many as 22 in the second half, the Nittany Lions gave the Spartan faithful a scare going on a 10-0 run to close Michigan State's lead to 47-36 with 12:19 to go. Penn State was able to close the gap to only 6 points several times in the final 10 minutes, but a 10-0 run by Michigan State put the game out of reach.

The Nittany Lions and Spartans both started the game cold from the floor going nearly 6 minutes without either team making a basket. Michigan State got going first and was able to pull away to a 33-19 lead at halftime. The Spartans were once again led by Draymond Green's 23 points and 12 rebounds.

Penn State was unable to overcome Michigan State's rebounding advantage and generated limited second chance opportunities. Penn State struggled early behind the arc and finished the game going only 6-20 from three. Early foul trouble also plagued the Nittany Lions as Michigan State's physical style of play in the paint proved to be too much for the smaller Penn State squad.

Michigan State totaled 18 second-chance points on 17 offensive rebounds, part of a 17-3 run to reestablish control and take a 72-52 with 3:29 left in the game.

Penn State falls to (10-15, 2-6) on the year and will play Nebraska this Saturday at the Bryce Jordan Center.
