Penn State Basketball: Stevens And Reaves Miss Out On NBA Combine Invites

by on May 08, 2019 2:45 PM

Penn State forward Lamar Stevens and former guard Josh Reaves have not been invited to next week's NBA Combine, the league announced its list of invited attendees on Wednesday afternoon.

Both Reaves and Stevens have been working out with teams this spring following the completion of the 2018-19 season. While Reaves is out of remaining eligibility, Stevens has until May 29th to withdraw his name from the draft process and return to Penn State.

As previously announced, neither player was invited to the G-League camp, a similar experience to the combine for NBA hopeful prospects.

For Reaves, he will continue through the draft process, likely hopeful for a chance to play in the NBA's Summer League where he will be able to showcase his skills in-game. Reaves had a fairly successful outing at the Portsmouth Invitational earlier this spring with very Reaves-esque stat-stuffing box scores.

In the case of Stevens, it seems likely that his decision will come sooner rather than later. A source says that decision will not come until he has finished working out with teams. Former Nittany Lion Tony Carr was invited to the 2018 combine before being drafted in the second round. Carr now plays Italy.

Overall, if Stevens is willing to play overseas and is simply looking to leave for the next level, that option might remains open for him. If he is hoping that his next step will be in the NBA, a lack of a combine invite might lend itself to the decision to return, likely a Top 5 player in the Big Ten next year.

If Stevens were to return he would be a pivotal piece of a corps of senior big man Mike Watkins and sophomore Myles Dread. Rising-sophomore Rasir Bolton entered the transfer portal in late May and will reportedly visit Iowa State this weekend.

Without both Stevens and Bolton, Penn State's outlook in 2019-20 is altered significantly.
