Penn State Basketball: Timeline Vague, But New Practice Facility In Master Plan

by on March 14, 2017 1:10 PM

Penn State basketball might just be getting a space to call its own if the recently released facilities master plan comes to fruition.

The proposed practice facility would be just over 74,000 square feet in the southeast corner of the parking area just adjacent to the Bryce Jordan Center and a short distance from an olympic sport training facility on the southwest corner of the same general area.

By in large that was the only tangible improvements surrounding the basketball program addressed by Penn State director of athletics Sandy Barbour on Monday. Barbour along with several other administrators noted the need to improve the atmosphere at the Jordan Center but were somewhat vague on what that might mean in terms of actionable plans. Some of this is the result of the fact that the Jordan Center is co-owned, limiting Penn State's ability to make changes without a few additional hurdles.

However, the proposed practice facility would be university-owned and one of the larger in the conference. Compared to the recently completed expansion of Ohio State's basketball practice area, the Buckeyes now prepare for games in a center of 40,000 square feet.

The price tag on that expansion? $19 million, and a fundraising goal that stalled construction as the university worked to raise the funding.

Where Penn State basketball falls in the hierarchy of plans that span the next 20-years is an unknown as well as the price tag. Not mention finding willing fans and donors interested in footing the bill.

Nevertheless the plan is out there, even if much of the exact details are still unknown.
