Penn State Berkey Creamery Among Stops on Pennsylvania Ice Cream Trail

by on June 10, 2019 2:34 PM

Penn State's Berkey Creamery is one of 32 stops statewide for the expanded, second annual Pennsylvania Ice Cream Trail.

An initiative of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development Tourism Office, Department of Agriculture and Center for Dairy Excellence, this year's Ice Cream Trail features three regional trails — Eastern, South Central and Western, that latter including Berkey Creamery as one of nine stops.

“It’s pretty cool to be part of a new summertime tradition in Pennsylvania,” Jim Brown, assistant manager of Penn State's Berkey Creamery said in a news release. “We look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones as they pursue their passion for ice cream and for Pennsylvania.”

Now through Sept. 2, ice cream lovers can download a passports from and those who visit five stops on the trail can win a #PursueYourScoops T-shirt. Visitors who get their passports stamped all stops on the trail will win a T-shirt and ice cream bowl.

The Ice Cream Trail started in 2018 to highlight local dairy farms and agritourism, featuring 12 creameries in eastern and south-central Pennsylvania. More than 1,500 passports were redeemed by people who visited at least six creameries on the inaugural trail.

After the success of the first year, the trail was expanded to feature more PA Preferred dairies.

“The dairy industry is an important part of Pennsylvania agriculture and our economy as a whole,” DCED Deputy Secretary Carrie Fischer Lepore said. “We’re proud to support that industry through these ice cream trails. These ice cream trails help tell the stories of Pennsylvania’s ice cream makers and how their ice cream is a truly home-grown treat for families to enjoy all summer long.”

Pennsylvania's dairy industry contributes $14. 7 billion to the economy and supports 52,000 jobs, making it the largest sector of the state's $135.7 billion agriculture industry.

Penn State's Berkey Creamery is the largest university creamery in the United States, producing cheese, milk, yogurt, sour cream and other products in addition to its famed ice cream.

“The only thing better than eating delicious ice cream is knowing your purchase supports Pennsylvania farms and Pennsylvania’s economy,” Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding said. “Learning the story of how food is made and seeing that connection between the cow and the cone adds even more fun.”
