Penn State Bids to Host NCAA Hockey Regional in Allentown for 3 More Years

Penn State athletics has bid to host the NCAA Hockey Midwest regional in Allentown for three more years, StateCollege.com has learned.

The program has not yet learned the outcome of that bid. (Allentown has also not moved to the midwest, but nevertheless)

Despite not making the NCAA Tournament in 2019, the Nittany Lions have proven to be a strong draw -- somewhat obviously -- in their own state. not far from the hockey-friendly and Penn State-friendly confines of Philadelphia.

In the 2018 Allentown regional at the PPL Center, Penn State's game against Denver was played in front of almost 7,500 fans while the regional final between Ohio State and Denver drew 5,124 the very next day. The first round meeting between Princeton and Ohio State does not have an officially recorded attendance figure but had the smallest crowd of the three games.

Even without the figures added for the third game the 12,615 fans in Allentown that weekend would have made for the largest regional attendance this season. In 2019 Providence led the way with 12,411 fans while Manchester saw 10,712 through the gates with Fargo and Allentown following behind with 8,468 and 7,324 fans respectively.

Of note, both Penn State and fellow host North Dakota missed the postseason. Host teams that make the tournament automatically play at their host site. Host bids are required to play games at a site other than home ice, hence why Allentown and not Pegula Ice Arena are the fixture of Penn State's postseason hosting aspirations.

There is no official date for regional sites to be announced for the upcoming seasons, but generally they have been released prior to the Frozen Four, which this year begins in Buffalo on April 11.

The Frozen Four will be played in Detroit in 2020, Pittsburgh in 2021 and Boston in 2022.
