Penn State Expenses for Sandusky Scandal Nears $52 Million
The latest numbers have been released and the cost of the Jerry Sandusky scandal has now passed the $51 million dollar mark. Penn State says it has spent a total of $51,792,125 as of August 31. That's according to the latest update posted on the Penn State progress website.
That figure is $1,332,297 higher than the previous update which was reported for the period ending on July 31. Nearly $540,000 of the increase is attributed to a category called "University Legal Services/Defense." Another large expenditure was for "Externally Initiated Investigations." The university paid more than $300,000 for those investigations in August.
The university releases the totals as the invoices come in. It typically takes about 45 days for the updates to be calculated.
University Spokesperson David La Torre has said repeatedly that the university does not comment on these expenditures.
Sandusky, the former Penn State defensive coordinator, was convicted in June 2012 on 45 counts of child sex abuse. He is currently serving a sentence of 30 to 60 years.
