Penn State Football: A New Era Officially Launches with Blue-White Game Saturday

by on April 11, 2014 11:59 AM

A new era for the Penn State football program will officially launch Saturday when new head football coach James Franklin steps off of the blue bus for the first time.

The team, led by Franklin and his coaching staff, will arrive to Beaver Stadium at 10:10 a.m. and be available between 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. for an autograph session with fans – an event fans missed out on last year. Staff will be distributing free posters at the gate fit for autographing.

"I think (Franklin's) excited. I think the coaches have been pleased with how things have gone in spring practice and they are looking forward to getting the team in the stadium and in front of the fans," says Jeff Nelson, assistant athletic director.

The annual scrimmage, which has become a local tradition, can draw up to 60,000 fans with good weather, Nelson says. Franklin hopes to hit a record and draw 80,000 to the stadium, he says.

"We're hopeful of a huge crowd tomorrow," Nelson says.

AccuWeather predicts Saturday will be sunny with a high around 68 degrees.

The annual event will not include a carnival at the corner of University Drive and Curtain Road due to construction work in that area. Additionally, the carnival, which is typically held Friday through Sunday, would likely not draw the usual crowd all three days with limited sporting events this weekend, Nelson says.

Staff will also be throughout Beaver Stadium armed with iPads to sell season tickets. So far, 2,500 season ticket packages have been sold this year. The ticketing office is also offering a new, reduced cost package for 2010-2014 graduates.

Reminders:

- Parking lots open at 8 a.m.

- Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.

- The Beaver Stadium bag policy will be in place, including during the autograph session.

- Standard footballs will be allowed inside the stadium for autographing.

- Players will only sign one item per fan.

- The RV traffic flow is different this year. All RV parking will be in lots northeast of stadium by Snider Agriculture Arena.
