by on August 02, 2016 2:40 PM

The Associated Press has been ranking the best teams in all of college football for more than 80 years. In fact there have been 1,103 polls in total to mark the passage of time since 1936. Out of the 165 schools just 44 have been ranked in the coveted No. 1 spot.

So as the 2016 season slowly closes in, the AP announced its all-time Top 25 using a formula that accounted for poll appearances, No. 1 rankings and champions.

And as the result of that formula, Penn State is the No. 12 all-time program in the nation.

Having appeared in 589 AP Polls, Penn State has been ranked No. 1 on 19 occasions and appeared in 95.2 percent of the polls in the 1990s. According to the AP, since making its poll debut in 1940, Penn State had never gone more than three seasons without being ranked at least once, until the sanctions hit in 2012.

Fellow Big Ten teams Michigan, Nebraska and Ohio State are ranked at the No. 7, 6 and No. 1 overall spots respectively. The Buckeyes picking up the No. 1 ranking on 105 occasions over the years.
