Penn State Football: Barajas Flips Commitment To Notre Dame

by on May 30, 2014 10:10 AM

Penn State football finally had some bad news on the recruiting trail on Friday morning as the 247 Network reported that Nittany Lion commit Josh Barajas has flipped his commitment to Notre Dame.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Barajas pledged to the Nittany Lions over the Irish in March. Before his commitment, Notre Dame was reportedly Barajas' top pick.

Barajas is rated by 247Sports as the nation's No. 2 inside linebacker and No. 157 prospect overall and is the top-rated player in Indiana.

"What he's going to get going to Notre Dame academically for his future, things Josh and I talked about. and with the football it's a great decision," Barajas' coach Phil Mason told 247.

"When talking about tradition in college football, Notre Dame is the first thing that pops in your mind. Being close to home and playing on the national stage, and I can't say enough about the coaching staff, Coach (Mike) Elston and Brian Kelly."

Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio State, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Oregon, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin were all schools vying for Barajas' services before he committed this March.

For Penn State and head coach James Franklin the departure of a previously committed recruit is a first under Franklin's leadership.

Recruiting is generally a fluid business with recruits prone to do just about anything at any give time. Considering that Franklin has admitted to turning away recruits due to scholarship limitations, a new opening in the class shouldn't be empty for too long.
