Penn State Football: Barkley Gives Penn State Another Top 10 Prospect From Inside State
James Franklin's early roll with the 2015 recruiting class continued late on Wednesday as the Nittany Lions landed former Rutgers' commit Saquon Barkley -- according to his twitter account and multiple recruiting outlets.
Listed as a 4-star running back by Rivals.com, Barkley hails from near Allentown. The 5-foot-11, 190 pound junior flipped his commitment from Rutgers to Penn State, confirming the change in a tweet. Barkley had received regional offers from schools like Syracuse, Boston College, North Carolina, and Pittsburgh.
Barkley joins offensive tackle Ryan Bates of Archbishop Wood High as the second Pennsylvania native to join the 2015 class this week. Bates and Barkley are among the Top 10 players in Pennsylvania's 2015 recruiting class according to several recruiting services. Bates is rated the fourth best prospect in the state, Barkley the seventh best by the 247sports Network.
In contrast, Penn State's recently signed 2014 class featured no players rated in the state's Top 10 rankings.
Barkley's verbal commitment marks the third 4-star recruit in Penn State's 2015 recruiting class of four players. Despite his contributions to the 2014 class, James Franklin's impact on the recruiting trail will be more measurable with Penn State's pending 2015 haul.
