Penn State Football: Blue-White Tailgating Guide
It's time to brush off the tailgating equipment--a new year of Penn State tailgating kicks off this weekend.
From Joe Paterno cookies to burgers from the Penn State meat sale, the following guide will help you plan a Beaver Stadium-worthy spread. And if you need some inspiration on what to cook, check out our tailgating recipes, including Barbie McQueary’s “Fiesta-In-Your-Mouth Chili.”
Penn State Meats Laboratory's weekly meat sale is this Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. (or until they run out) at the corner of Porter Road and Park Avenue. Some of the best USDA-approved beef, pork, and lamb can be found here. Warning: The meat is a hot commodity, and it sells out fast on a football weekend. (Never been to the sale? Read about it here.)
Prospector's Allegheny Rib Company offers spreads for tailgating crowds that can really eat. Ten full racks of ribs and six sides, which feed up to 15, go for $145. Five full racks of ribs, two buckets of wings (60 total), and six sides cost $119 and feed 10.
If wings and ribs aren’t your thing, Prospector's also offers four pounds of pulled pork, 10 chicken quarters, and six sides for $79 (feeds 10). To pre-order your tailgate party packs, call (814) 861-RIBS. All orders for tailgate packs must be placed by Friday and can be picked up Saturday at the restaurant at 2080 Cato Ave. or at the stand by the stadium. The full menu can be found here.
Another catering option is Damon's Grill. "The Touchdown" comprises 10 full racks of ribs, two pints of cole slaw, and two pints of baked beans for $149.95 (feeds 10). "The Extra Point" feeds 12 and consists of six BBQ half chickens, six full racks of ribs, two pints of cole slaw, and two pints of baked beans for $149.95. To order, call (814) 237-9151. Damon’s recommends placing orders by Friday evening so they can be picked up Saturday morning at the restaurant at 1031 E. College Ave. The full catering menu can be found here.
What would a tailgate be without beer? Nittany Beverage, 139 Patterson St., is selling Miller Lite 30 packs for $19.75, Miller High Life and High Life Light 30 packs for $16, Milwaukee’s Best 30 packs for $13.95, and Keystone 30 packs for $16. Cases are available in plastic bottles.
If you're more of an Anheuser-Busch person, head over to W.R. Hickey on 1321 E. College Ave. It's running a 30-pack spring special on Natural Light for $13.96. Twenty-four packs of Busch and Busch Light are $11.98 each, and 24 packs of Yuengling Premium and Premium Light are $14.15. Cases are available in plastic bottles.
Beer Belly's Beverage, 258 W. Hamilton Ave., is selling 24 packs of Budweiser, Bud Light, Coors, and Coors Light for $18.40.
Remember: Alcohol consumption is not allowed during the game.
Sweet Tooth Bakery gives cakes and cookies the blue-and-white treatment, adorning them with PSU logos and photos. It also sells a Joe Paterno cookie. Sweet Tooth is open until Friday, but large orders should be placed by Wednesday. Check out the baked goods here.
Sugar on Top is another spot for Penn State-themed desserts like the "We Are" cupcake, a blue velvet cake with butter cream frosting. The "JoePaw" cupcakes, shaped like a Nittany Lion paw, are another popular choice. Sugar on Top recommends placing orders online or at the shop by the end of Thursday.
The only grocery store in town that sells beer is Wegmans, 345 Colonnade Boulevard, which means you can stock up on food, supplies (table cloths are in stock), and drinks in one trip. The amount of beer you can buy in one purchase is limited to 184 ounces.
