Penn State Football: Bob Shoop Reportedly In Tennessee To Interview For DC Position

by on January 08, 2016 1:55 PM

Penn State defensive coordinator Bob Shoop is in Knoxville, Tenn. Friday, reportedly set to interview for the same position for the Vols.

The news comes just days after Shoop at least appeared to deny interest in any other jobs around the nation.

"No is the answer to that question," Shoop said when asked in Jacksonville if he had interviewed or planned to interview elsewhere. "That's the simple answer to that question and today is really about our team and looking forward to going out there on Saturday. I hope that Penn State will have me forever and ever and ever. I love being part of coach Franklin's program, I love what we're building here and i said this millions of times, I think we're a 30 For 30 story ready to rock and roll. It's just a matter of time before we get this thing rolling. We're playing in the best division in the best conference in college football and that's really exciting to me."

One dynamic to consider during these talks likely would be financially related. Shoop's contract extension last offseason reportedly pays him the upwards of nearly $1 million per year. According to The Tennessean, recently dismissed DC John Jancek was making $520,000 to run the defense prior to his dismissal just days ago.

If Shoop were to take a pay cut to coach the same position at a different school, it would be an interesting indictment of the James Franklin era. Shoop is the first defensive coordinator at Penn State since the start of the NCAA sanction era to coach more than one consecutive season in Happy Valley. He was the fourth DC in four years when taking the job under James Franklin last season. will have more as this story develops.
