Penn State Football: Combine Schedule For Former Nittany Lions

by on March 01, 2018 12:10 PM

The NFL Combine has been gearing up for the past few days in Indianapolis. On Thursday afternoon the always entertaining bench press process will begins, but workouts don't truly start until Friday morning as the first group of players take the field.

For Penn State it marks the start of the next chapter for eight Nittany Lions who were invited to the invite. Saquon Barkley might be the headliner of the bunch, but he in reality has the least to prove of almost anyone within 100 miles of the stadium.

Nevertheless Barkley will continue to prove that he has a unique set of physical tools, working out in front of some scouts and coaches that have only ever seen him on film. As anyone who has had the pleasure of seeing him in person, it's something else all together.

The NFL Network will carry all of the workouts starting Friday at 9 AM until 4 PM. Then at night starting at 8 PM the network will air a condensed version of the day's events. Workouts will also be streamed online.

So what to watch and when? Here are the workout schedules:

Friday: RB, OL, ST

On paper this is just Barkley's day to shine if you're a Penn State fan. There is a chance someone like Troy Apke or any of Penn State fringe defensive players could workout as a special teams athlete but until that actually happens we can just assume everyone will be working out with the position group they played in college.

Saturday: QB, WR, TE

Another big day for DaeSean Hamilton who has seen his stock quickly rise after impressing during Senior Bowl week. Hamilton will have to run well, but his hands will shine and his routes will look crisp. Same for Mike Gesicki who ought to put up some of the more impressive physical numbers for tight ends this week. Gesicki still has to prove his worth in the blocking game, but there's no doubt he will impress with everything else he brings to the table.

Sunday: DL, LB

Jason Cabinda will hit the field on Sunday with a bit to prove. There's no doubt what he brings to the table from a preparation standpoint and the mental aspects, he's just probably not an every-down linebacker at the next level. That doesn't mean he won't have a good weekend, but Cabinda is an interesting case of a talented college player that will have to work to find his role in the NFL. But he deserve a chance, and Sunday will go a long way towards convincing others of that.

Monday: DBs

In terms of volume this day is the most Penn State heavy. Christian Campbell, Marcus Allen, Troy Apke and Grant Haley will all take the field after a lot of waiting around. All of them have something to prove, but Apke and Campbell probably have the most to gain. All four will probably get a shot but it remains to be seen if anyone not named Marcus Allen can sneak into the earlier rounds of the draft.
