Penn State Football: Dates To Know As Spring Ball Approaches

by on March 10, 2016 2:00 PM

It feels like the 2015 season only just finished, and yet here we are, days away from spring football and even fewer days away from the first James Franklin press conference of the 2016 season.

But chances are football still feels like a lifetime away for many of you. Until it's time to warm up the grills and put some gas in the RV tank it might just slip your mind. If nothing else, your calendar isn't full of dates to keep an eye on between now and the start of the season come Sept. 3.

So here are a few times and events to remember between now and then.

Monday, March 14: James Franklin spring press conference

The first chance to hear from the man himself before Penn State takes the field just a few days later. Franklin has spoken to the media since all of the new hires on his staff, but with practices just around the corner this is the first time to really talk football. Franklin will take the podium at noon to start things off.

Thursday, March 17: Pro Day

With the NFL Combine over and the NFL Draft quickly approaching, Pro Day will provide Penn State NFL hopefuls with one final chance to show what they have to offer to scouts and coaches. Christian Hackenberg will be the biggest storyline of the day but the likes of Jordan Lucas and Anthony Zettel will still have a chance to prove they can go higher in the draft order. This event won't likely be open to the media but players will have a chance to speak with reporters following their workouts. Pro Day is always an interesting chance to see what random NFL coaches show up on campus. Last year it was Chip Kelly casually walking around that made the headlines.

Friday, March 18: Practice starts

No more waiting, Penn State takes the field on Friday for the first practice of the season. With the Blue White game less than a month away, it will be a mad dash to the finish line as the Nittany Lions look to install the basics of both offensive and defensive systems under new coordinators. Not to mention take the first steps towards a new era under center at the quarterback position.

Saturday, April 16: Blue White

The first look at Penn State's new offense under Joe Moorhead and a chance to see what the Nittany Lions might look like in 2016 as Penn State takes the field for the final practice of the spring session. After that it's summer workouts until training camp begins late in the summer. So get your fill, and with no TV broadcast you'll have to make the trip to State College if you want to see how things are going in the early stages of a new era.

April 28-30: NFL Draft

After years of hard work and long hours, a handful of Nittany Lions will learn their professional fate for the early stages of their careers as the NFL Draft takes place. Austin Johnson is the most likely to go in the first round, but eyes will be on Christian Hackenberg to see where he lands and if he is drafted at all. Once the draft is completed, the next several days will help far more players find a home through the free agent process.
