Penn State Football: Devon Smith Waives Preliminary Hearing

by on May 30, 2012 9:10 AM

Facing possession charges, Penn State senior wide receiver Devon Smith waived his right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday morning at the Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte.

Smith was charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia following a March 14 search and seizure of his on-campus apartment by Penn State Police.

Former defensive end Jack Crawford, who was listed on the police search warrant as a resident of the apartment, was not charged.

Smith missed most of the spring with a sprained left foot.

Penn State  coach Bill O'Brien said last month whatever disciplinary action he decides to exercise against Smith in connection with the incident is between them.

"Here's a kid that I think is a good kid, that I've spoken to about what went on there,'' O'Brien said during a stop on the Coaches Caravan.

"He has his side of the story. What I do with Devon Smith will be between Devon Smith and I. I'm behind Devon Smith. He's a good kid and he's going into his last year and I believe in the kid.''
