Penn State Football: Edsall Not Concerned About Franklin's Territorial Claims

by on June 17, 2014 11:20 AM

It may have taken a while for word to finally reach Maryland, but now that it has head coach Randy Edsall isn't too concerned about Penn State coach James Franklin's plans to treat Maryland and New Jersey as in-state recruiting territories.

"We're not gonna boast and brag. We're more about substance at Maryland," said Edsall at an event on Monday according to the York Dispatch. "We're gonna find guys that fit the profile we're looking for. We're gonna worry about ourselves and not worry about anything else. Talk is cheap."

So far Penn State's 2015 recruiting class features eight recruits from the Maryland, New Jersey and DC area with three hailing directly from Maryland proper.

While neither Franklin nor Edsall have started anything close to a war of words, the rivalry between the two schools will be somewhat inevitable now that both share conference affiliation and already share physical borders. It might take some time for Maryland to catch up to the Nittany Lions, but both teams will get a shot every year to prove their continued growth as a program or continued dominance in the series.

"Maryland has not had a lot of success against Penn State. We're 35-1-1 against them but there's been some great games in that series," Edsall said. "I think it's something that can be a good rivalry. We have to do something about that on our end. I think it's just a natural fit. It'll be fun to play. To be able to play against them is fun. They're a good program and good school. Being a border rival is something, to me, that will be exciting for both schools."

*This isn't the first time Franklin has heard from an opposing coach.
