Penn State Football: Ficken And Hamilton Pick Up Conference Honors
It has been quite the week for Penn State football and the positive news keeps on coming.
Kicker Sam Ficken and wide receiver DaeSean Hamilton earned Big Ten Football Player of the Week honors after career performances during Saturday’s 26-24 victory over Central Florida.
Ficken was named the conference’s Special Teams Player of the Week, while Hamilton received Co-Freshmen of the Week recognition.
Hamilton put on an outstanding display in his Penn State debut with 11 catches for 165 yards setting new school records in both categories for a Nittany Lion freshman. Hamilton is the first Penn State freshman to break the 100 yard mark in a single game since Deon Butler and Jordan Noorwood both did in 2005.
On the special teams side, Ficken made a career-high four field goals on four attempts from 22, 33, 24, and 36 yards. His 36-yard game winner from the right hash was the second winner of his career but the first to come at the final play of the game. The earlier kick came against Wisconsin in 2012 decided in overtime.
Despite a roller-coaster career, this is the third time Ficken has received Big Ten Special Team Player of the Week honors, and the first since September 2, 2013 after he went 3/3 against Syracuse at MetLife Stadium.
Penn State hosts Akron this Saturday at noon.
