Penn State Football: Five-Star Fields Opens Up Recruitment

by on June 06, 2017 9:44 PM

Penn State football took a hit on the recruiting trail Tuesday night as five-star 2018 quarterback Justin Fields announced that will be reopening his recruitment.

Fields verbally committed to Penn State back on December 1 just two days prior to the Nittany Lions' Big Ten title victory over Wisconsin in Indianapolis. Since then Fields has continued to see his stock rise as well as the offers continue to roll in. Earlier this week Fields was announced as an Elite 11 finalists that showcases 11 of the nation's top quarterback recruits.

While it's unknown where Fields will play his college ball, the prevailing belief among recruiting sites is that the Georgia native will eventually end up at Florida.

For the Nittany Lions the loss is clearly not a positive, and Fields makes the second five-star commit to rethink his verbal commitment with Harrisburg native and defensive end Micah Parsons opening his recruitment earlier last month.

Despite the obvious negatives, Penn State still has plenty of options at the quarterback position for the immediate future. With Trace McSorley still on campus for one if not two more seasons that leaves Sean Clifford and Tommy Stevens as two capable replacements following McSorley's tenure in the backfield.
