Penn State Football: Five-Star Recruit Breneman Enjoying Life Since Committing for 2013

As Happy Valley is buzzing with the beginning of the Bill O’Brien era, and the start of what may be the best Penn State recruiting class in a decade, 2013 verbal commit Adam Breneman is enjoying the freedom that comes with making his college choice.

“Things have been a lot less stressful,” said Breneman, who balanced playing for Cedar Cliff High School's basketball team while visiting several of the nation’s top major college football programs during the past year.

“My girlfriend used to get mad at me because my phone would just ring and ring and ring, I didn’t really have any free time.”

While Penn State’s 2013 recruiting class has plenty of big names in it, there is little doubt that Breneman -- rated a five-star recruit by --  is the crown jewel of the haul.

The soft-spoken tight end out of Camp Hill, Pa. had 72 catches for 1,120 yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior last season.

Breneman’s verbal commitment to Penn State on March 9 -- exactly a month ago -- in front of a packed gym at his high school marked a watershed moment in the Nittany Lions' recruiting class as three four-star recruits followed in the ensuing weeks.

Now only a week removed from his 17th birthday, Breneman is finally getting a chance to relax. He will return Monday from a five-day trip to the Bahamas.

But, even with his college decision out of the way, Breneman is intent on making his mark with the rest of Penn State's 2013 recruiting class. He has begun to meet more of his fellow commits, including four-star quarterback Christian Hackenberg, from Virginia.

Hackenberg, whose verbal commitment in late February helped seal the deal for Breneman and Penn State, has gotten to know his future teammate a little better. Breneman and Hackenberg met for the first time two weekends ago in Happy Valley during a visit to campus.

"Christian and I have gotten really close," Breneman said. "He's a great guy and it was great to see practice. Practice was very intense and high tempo."
