Penn State Football: Franklin And Staff Set To Kick Off Satellite Camps

by on June 09, 2015 2:00 PM

When NASA finally makes the call to send humans on the long journey to Mars they will likely select from a pool of college football coaches to make the trip.

They're people full of an endless supply of energy with thousands of miles and hours behind the wheel of a vehicle away from home.

It might sound depressing, but the payoff is huge, and who better to recruit any potential alien lifeforms to the side of humanity than coaches who spend their time, when not behind the wheel, vigorously recruiting to their cause.

Maybe it's a stretch. But by the time James Franklin has completed the next few weeks he might at least consider what he wants to do with a life after football.

Starting this week Franklin will make his way around the country for football camps in six different cities before returning to State College to run five football camps of his own.

Like all good tours Franklin will kick things off outside Detroit with a speaking engagement on Thursday at the Sound Mind Sound Body clinic for a few hundred recruits. Franklin won't be the only coach of note at this stop with the likes of Urban Meyer, Jim Harbaugh and coaches from several other conferences in attendance.

From there it's a flight to Tampa for a one day football camp on June 12 with the rest of his assistants. Franklin and his staff will then take a few days off before traveling to just outside to Chicago to work yet another camp on June 15th.

Then it's back down to Atlanta with Georgia State for another satellite camp on June 16. After that a quick swing up to Charlotte on June 17th to work with Davidson before finishing off the tour at Old Dominion on June 18th at Virginia Beach.

By the time all of that is accomplished, Franklin will have just two days to prepare for the start of Penn State's summer camps starting with a 7-on-7 event June 20th that will shift into an elite camp and specialist camp on June 21.

The chaos of June will finally stop after a second elite camp on June 26th. From there Penn State won't host any large grouping of prospects until the final two camps of the year on July 17 and July 19.

If it sounds like an insane itinerary you wouldn't be wrong, but it's also a massive recruiting tool. The ability to bring your program and your message to different locations around the country is a crucial asset. Not every recruit can make it to State College for a visit and Franklin is leaving no stone unturned.

And that's key to any good exploration, be it on Mars or just a short plane ride away.
