Penn State Football: Franklin Nips A&M Rumors In The Bud

by on October 17, 2017 2:30 PM

Penn State coach James Franklin found himself the center of some unexpected coaching carousel rumors this past weekend, this time, a potential target for Texas A&M if the Aggies part ways with current coach Kevin Sumlin.

The report by CBS Denis Dodd mentioned that A&M would target Franklin if Sumlin was no longer with the program, and in turn, Penn State was preparing for that possibility. Franklin's current contract would require a $2 million buyout this season.

All of this happening as Franklin found himself, coincidentally, recruiting in Texas during the bye week.

Of course Franklin being the target of struggling programs is hardly a surprise. Neither is Penn State's somewhat accurate assumption that Franklin will eventually be courted by other schools. All of this tied together by the fact Franklin and Sumlin share the same agent.

Franklin addressed those rumors during his Tuesday media availability.

"Again, for me, it's like I mentioned earlier, it's eliminating distractions," Franklin said of the rumors and this weekend's game against Michigan. "I wasn't going to respond at all, to be honest with you. But our fans, they were wearing me out on Twitter. I think our players were perfectly fine. Our coaches were perfectly fine. I just wanted everybody to stop talking about it and let's start talking about Michigan, Michigan, Michigan, Michigan, Michigan, Michigan, Michigan, Michigan, Michigan, not the white-out, not the rankings, not last year's Big Ten championship, not any of these other things. I want to keep our team focused and keep our routine the same."

"As we all know, there's a lot of different reasons for these things coming up. I think the biggest thing is distractions." Franklin added tellingly.

Franklin may have never left for A&M and the Aggies may have never really wanted him in the first place. But mark this as Round 1 of what will undoubtedly be several when it comes to programs hoping to nab Franklin and his program-building acumen.
