Penn State Football: Franklin's Quest For Packed Beaver Stadium Begins Today With Season Ticket Renewals And Upgrades

by on March 13, 2014 10:20 AM

James Franklin wants to see Beaver Stadium packed to the very top for every home game.

That quest took a first step on Thursday when Nittany Lion Club members got a chance to renew tickets and change seat selections.

The process which continues at least through April 10, will give Franklin and his staff a good idea of how many Nittany Lion Club faithful might be there to see them and their team come this fall. The open period is a unique one as fans can choose to upgrade their current ticket location in favor of better seats or simply renew their current holdings for the upcoming season.

Franklin probably won't have a real good idea of how ticket sales are going until later this summer though. In June of 2013, Penn State was still receiving season ticket purchases late into the summer.

"As it pertains to current season sales, total 2013 season tickets sold and paid in full to date is 89% of the season tickets purchased last year," A Penn State official told StateCollege.com in June of 2013. "As a point of reference, in recent years, the renewal rate has hovered between 91-95%. Obviously, that 89% will only increase as fans continue to purchase season tickets between now and the start of the season."

While it may be unlikely that Beaver Stadium is full every Saturday, there is little doubt that Penn State will continue to bring in fans each home game. In the 2013 -- for the 23rd consecutive season -- Penn State's total season attendance ranked in the Top 5 nationally.

In 2013, the Nittany Lions drew 676,112 fans, an average of 96,587 per game, off by just 143 fans per game (996 total, 0.1 percent) compared to the 2012 average of 96,730.

Some Nittany Lion Club members may have had a bit of a panic Thursday morning though as an email was sent out to all ticket holding members about the renewal process starting for all members today. Sales are done in order of NLC points so not all members are eligible for renewal at the same time.

According to the NLC ticketing page:

The selection assignments are ordered by Nittany Lion Club point totals as of Feb. 1, 2014. The selection assignment represents the earliest time that you can access the venue. The overall selection process requires several weeks to complete and we cannot offer exceptions to the assigned dates or times.

A follow-up email was quickly sent out to correct the error and the small crisis was averted after what was apparently a simple human mistake.

"Unfortunately it was human error that caused a larger recipient list to receive the email this morning," Jeff Garner, Assistant Athletic Director, Ticketing Sales and Service told StateCollege.com. "All of the correct selection dates and times were in the body of those emails but our morning reminder simply went to anyone that was scheduled between 3/13 and 3/22 rather than only those schedule on 3/13. Those scheduled between 3/13 and 3/22 have already received selection dates and times via US Mail and Email, the morning reminder is meant to be one last notification."

So while some fans may have gotten excited about an unexpected early shot at the best seats in the house, it looks like they'll still have to wait for the correct date to make their selection.
