Penn State Football: Freiermuth Will Forgo Upcoming Season, Per Report

by on September 09, 2020 1:30 PM

According to a report by the Centre Daily Times, Penn State tight end Pat Freiermuth will opt out of any upcoming college football season to prepare for the NFL Draft.

The junior tight end has not announced his decision and had previously — prior to the Big Ten's cancelation of its fall sports calendar — made public his intentions to return for a third year.

All told, the reported news is not entirely surprising as the conference continues to stumble toward either a winter restart or tentative attempts at playing in the spring. The NFL Draft not long after the conclusion of any delayed season would almost certainly leave Freiermuth with limited time to prepare or recover from any injuries sustained.

Theoretically, Freiermuth could return for a senior season, although all things being equal, his draft status and general statements regarding his return seem to leave little room for that possibility.

In turn, as one of the highest rated tight ends in the nation, Freiermuth will reportedly prepare for the next chapter of his career, following in the footsteps of star linebacker Micah Parsons who opted out in early August.

While he will come up short in the record books due to just two seasons of play, Freiermuth will leave Penn State among the most talented to play the position and certainly with a bright professional future in front of him.

Back in State College, any upcoming season would have Penn State looking at Isaac Lutz and Brenton Strange at the tight end position, with freshman Theo Johnson and others in the wings as well.
