Penn State Football: Friday Night Games Still in the Cards After All-Saturday Schedule Release

by on September 28, 2020 1:40 PM

Penn State and Indiana are scheduled to open the season on Oct. 24 in Bloomington, but that date might just change.

Indiana head coach Tom Allen told reporters on Monday afternoon that the program is still waiting to see if the season opener would be a Friday or Saturday affair. The Big Ten originally announced that the season would begin the 23rd and 24th, a Friday/Saturday pairing, but later released a Week 1 schedule entirely of games on the 24th.

A Penn State spokesperson said 'in theory' it is possible the Nittany Lions' opener could be moved the 23rd, but like all things in 2020, that is to be determined.

The Big Ten is, so far, without a single Friday night game on the 2020 schedule, a change from the past few years when the conference began to pivot toward a handful of Friday night games throughout the course of the season. Traditionally, big-crowd programs like Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State have not been subject to hosting Friday night games in order to avoid attendance and logistical issues. Without fans in the stands this year, not only could Penn State theoretically host a Friday night game, it could see a road contest adjusted as well.

No kick times have been announced for any Big Ten contests this season, nor have TV arrangements. The Big Ten also did not previously release any either/or dates beyond the Friday/Saturday opening weekend, so it is unclear if Week 1 is the only up for consideration in terms of Friday contests.

Penn State has played twice on Friday night, once at Maryland and for the first time against Illinois in 2018. The Nittany Lions won both games in convincing fashion.

Adjusting the schedule for a Friday night showdown wouldn't be without precedent. Penn State's 2019 meeting with Maryland was originally slated for a Saturday before later changing to a Friday night contest.
