Penn State Football: Gesicki Named To Mackey Award Watch List

by on July 06, 2016 11:30 AM

Penn State junior tight end Mike Gesicki started off the second day of the preseason award watch list tsunami as he was named to the 2016 John Mackey Award list. The Mackey Award is given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end. The award is named after NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey, who is considered to be the best to have played the tight end position.

Gesicki is the oldest tight end on the roster having appeared in 25 of 26 games. As a sophomore, he had 13 catches for 125 yards and a touchdown. He averaged 10.4 yards per game. Gesicki pulled in a career-high three catches for 14 yards against Buffalo and hauled in a 33-yard touchdown catch against Army.

While the potential is certainly there, Gesicki will look to improve on a rocky sophomore season in which he struggled with dropped passes and a few missteps along the way.

“If I’m completely honest, I’m not worried about the past anymore," Gesicki said after the season. "I’m not thinking about the past anymore. I’m excited for the future, excited for this new offense and excited for the team to continue to mature. I’m going to continue to improve day-in and day-out, and I think these new two years under Coach Moorhead and this offense will be very exciting and very fun to play in.”

Gesicki is the fourth Nittany Lion to make a preseason watch list, running back Saquon Barkley and junior wide receiver Chris Godwin were named to the Maxwell Award watch list for the National Player of the Year, while junior linebacker Jason Cabinda is a nominee for the Bednarik Award for the National Defensive Player of the Year.

Penn State opens the 2016 campaign against Kent State at Beaver Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 3.
