James Franklin and Penn State are set to face Michigan State this weekend for the final regular season game of the year for the Nittany Lions.

Follow along here live for updates inside Beaver Stadium.

  • Franklin opening with his usual statement, notes that Penn State lost the turnover battle and penalty battle against Illinois and both aspects hurt.
  • Franklin happy with how Penn State was able to limit bit plays but notes that they had 12 missed tackles.
  • Franklin says that he feels that the decision to punt on fourth and short on Penn State's side of the field late in the game was the right choice. Says you put your best unit out on the field and take it from there. If you look how the defense has played all year it was the best option since Illinois only needed a field goal to win.
  • Michigan State with consistency on their staff has been a big part of the program's ability to rise in the ranks. Notes that the body type and size of the defense is the most like Alabama's that he has seen.
  • Franklin says that senior day is a little different for him this year because he hasn't been here for their entire career but understanding what the seniors mean to Penn State makes it easy to appreciate what they have done.

  • "Hard working, blue collar, appreciative." Franklin's words used to describe Mike Hull.
  • Franklin happy with how freshman linebacker Jason Cabinda has played this season but notes that losing Brandon Bell has impacted on us. Says it's similar to losing Ryan Keiser even though Marcus Allen has played great.
  • "Having Keiser back is big for all of us."
  • Franklin says that he had the captains in his office on Saturday after the game for nearly an hour after they got back from Illinois.
  • Franklin is happy with how Hackenberg has played but they need to work on his technique and skills as much as they need to work on developing they guys around him as well. "There's nobody harder on Hack than Hack."
  • Franklin says that Hackenberg has held up extremely well considering the circumstances but he's usually sore on Sunday but "Bounces back in there."
  • Franklin confident in how he is able to gauge the temperature of his team in terms of knowing when people need a pat on the back and when they need support as well has when they need to celebrate and hug and kiss and scream and shout.
  • "When you can do those things once you can do it again," Franklin on the end of season upsets Penn State has pulled off the past two years.
  • Franklin doesn't have anything to say about John Donovan's play calling. More concerned about issues up front on both sides of the ball, getting talent around Hackenberg.
  • We have to play more consistently.
  • Being in the pocket is his strength but a pocket has not been a strength of this offense.
  • Franklin says that the kickoff that Illinois recovered had a lot to do with one of the weirdest plays he has seen. Ball was kicked well and team backed up but then the wind killed it and dropped the ball straight down.
