Penn State Football: Jesse James Named to Award Watch List

by on October 14, 2014 6:00 AM

Penn State junior Jesse James has been named to the Mid-season Watch List for the 2014 John Mackey Award, an honor presented annually to the nation’s best collegiate tight end.

James has started all six games this season bringing his streak for consecutive starts to 18 contests over the past two seasons. The 6-7, 271-pound James is tied for third on the team with 18 receptions, good for 203 yards (11.3 avg.). He has a long catch of 44 yards and his two touchdown catches from Christian Hackenberg lead the team this season. Both scores came during Penn State's victory over Akron earlier in the season.

The Mackey Award honors Pro Football Hall of Fame member John Mackey. In 10 NFL seasons with the Baltimore Colts (1963-71) and the San Diego Chargers (1972), Mackey revolutionized the tight end position.

He twice compiled season averages of more than 20 yards a catch, and his 10-year career average of 15.8 is considered unprecedented for a tight end. Mackey also was the first president of the NFLPA.

The award recipient is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee. The 2014 winner will be announced on Dec. 10 and the award will be presented live on Dec. 11 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on ESPNU.

The Mackey Award semifinalists and finalists will be announced in late November.
