Penn State Football: John Strollo Joining O'Brien's Staff
by on January 09, 2012 12:07 PM

Update:

Donnie Collins of the Times Tribune is reporting that Strollo will coach only Tight Ends under Bill O'Brien and that former Texas Offensive Line coach Mac McWorther will come out of retirment to coach the offensive line. Check StateCollege.com for more as the story unfolds.

Another day, another staff update.

Monday, Chris Lowry of WIOU and WMYK in Kokomo, Ind., as well as the website FootballScoop.com are reporting Ball State offensive line coach John Strollo will join Bill O'Brien's staff at Penn State, likely in the same position.

That would make him the fourth on O'Brien's staff, joining Larry Johnson (defensive line), Ron Vanderlinden (linebackers) and Charles London (running backs).

We also know Bill Kenney and Kermit Buggs will not be retained under O'Brien. Lions247.com, a Penn State football website, confirmed the Kenney news through Jake Kiley, a New Hampshire defensive back who was being recruited by Kenney. Buggs announced he won't be retained on his Twitter page Monday morning.

The Strollo hire signals offensive line coach Dick Anderson will not be retained after spending 34 years on staff, including the last 12 working with offensive guards and centers.

Strollo, who turns 58 on Jan. 20, was Duke's offensive line coach while O'Brien was its offensive coordinator. His only season at Ball State was his 31st as a football coach, previously holding positions at Elon, Cornell, Maine, Lafayette, Massachusetts and Northeastern, among others.

According to his bio on Ball State's athletic website, Strollo's recruiting areas include Michigan, northeast Indiana and the Dayton and Cincinnati regions in southwest Ohio.

O'Brien said he hoped to have his staff nearly completed by the middle of the week. He told ESPN on Sunday he should have seven members of his staff announced by Wednesday.

Jay Paterno and Tom Bradley can be considered longshots to be retained from the last regime, as well, though no official announcement has been made.

Bradley released a statement to The Centre Daily Times on Saturday, shortly after O'Brien's introductory press conference saying, in part, "I wish Coach O'Brien all the best. No matter the challenges that the university may face, Penn State will always have my support"

Bradley served as defensive coordinator prior to being named interim coach when Joe Paterno was fired Nov. 9 in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sex-abuse scandal.

Roof Next?

O'Brien told ESPN his staff would be comprised of coaches with an NFL and college background as well as experience winning national championships.

One name to remember as O'Brien's staff continues to take shape is Ted Roof, the newly named Central Florida defensive coordinator who was head coach at Duke during O'Brien's two-year run as offensive coordinator. And, Roof coached with O'Brien on George O'Leary's staff at Georgia Tech from 1998-2001.

Roof also was the defensive coordinator at Auburn in 2010, when, yes, they won a national championship. Before Auburn, he coached at Minnesota, so he does have a feel for the Big Ten landscape.

Roof left Auburn last month after signing a three-year contract with the Tigers in 2011 that paid him an annual salary of $500,000, according to the Birmingham News.
