Penn State Football: Johnson Reportedly Exploring Transfer Options

by on January 11, 2019 3:46 PM

Penn State receiver Juwan Johnson has reportedly entered the NCAA transfer portal, according to Bruce Feldman of The Athletic. Johnson hauled in 25 catches for 352 yards this past season while making appearances in seven games as he battled injuries.

A recent graduate, Johnson would not have to sit out a season after transferring per NCAA rules.

Johnson's best performance came against Ohio State when the junior pulled in five passes for 61 yards, including a spectacular one-handed catch along the sideline. He caught two passes during Penn State's Citrus Bowl loss to Kentucky.

With a large frame and big catch potential that never became full realized on the field, Johnson was somewhat of a headliner for Penn State's receiving woes in 2018. His last-second catch to beat Iowa in 2017 gave fans high hopes for the rising star, but those hopes failed to turn into reality for much of 2018.

In theory, Johnson entering the transfer market doesn't automatically mean he will be leaving Penn State. Quarterback Tommy Stevens also explored his options last offseason before opting to stay in State College. While Johnson might look for a fresh start, and jump at the chance to do so, there is no guarantee he will ultimately leave.

Nevertheless, the potential loss of Johnson would mark yet another role to fill on an offense that has seen its fair share of change already in the past 12 months. Johnson would mark the sixth player to leave the program this offseason along with five others declaring for the NFL Draft.

In his absence, Penn State would likely turn to KJ Hamler, Jahn Dotson and others to carry to bulk of the load in the receiving corps.
