Penn State Football: Latest College Football Playoff Poll Has Nittany Lions At No.8

by on November 15, 2016 9:23 PM

Penn State survived a chaotic weekend in college football with a victory over Indiana and the Nittany Lions continue to climb up the polls to as a result.

Already No. 9 in the AP Poll and No. 10 in the Coaches Poll, Penn State hit a program high of No. 8 in the College Football Playoff Poll released on Tuesday night.

With an Iowa upset of Michigan on Saturday night the Nittany Lions suddenly are in the thick of the Big Ten title race. A Michigan loss against either Indiana or Ohio State coupled with Penn State winning its final two games of the season would send the Nittany Lions to the championship game in Indianapolis against Wisconsin. Michigan quarterback Wilton Speight has a broken collarbone and is expected to miss the remainder of the season.

Of course, as one might expect the Nittany Lions aren't looking any farther ahead than Rutgers this weekend on the road.

"I was just watching on TV, actually," tight end Mike Gesicki said with a smile when asked about the Iowa upset. "Me and Tommy (Stevens) were watching it. We were just sitting there watching the game. It ended the way it did. You kind of know how it goes. I'm not going to comment on any of that kind of stuff. But obviously it was definitely an exciting game to watch."

A Penn State win this weekend could set up for a crucial meeting against Michigan State in the season finale. Ohio State and Michigan are slated for a noon kick in two weeks while Penn State and Michigan State will have their kick time announced late Saturday night. An Ohio State victory prior to what is very likely a 3:30 game time at Beaver Stadium means the Nittany Lions could know if their Big Ten title fate is still alive prior to kickoff.
