Penn State Football: Live National Signing Day 2014 Coverage

by on February 05, 2014 7:45 AM

Over a year of recruiting, phone calls, visits, and scouting comes to an end today as prospects sign the dotted line, committing to various programs across the country. For Penn State, the 2014 recruiting class will showcase the efforts of two separate and very different coaching staffs.

No matter who recruited these players though, almost 20 new Nittany Lions are expected to make it official Wednesday. The process is as simple as a signature on a National Letter of Intent that is then faxed to Penn State. As soon as the fax comes off the press it is run past the compliance department and once it's approved the athletic department will announce the news to the Penn State faithful.

A National Letter of Intent (NLI) is a binding document to the program that essentially states that a student athlete agrees to play a sport for a program in exchange for a scholarship. Once a NLI is signed a recruit closes his recruitment process and is essentially a member of program. Penn State can carry 75 scholarship players on the roster for the 2014 season per NCAA sanctions, 10 shy of the total allotted to any major Division I football program.

Signing Day can be an exciting time for any athlete who hasn't yet decided where he is going to attend school and any fan following the process. For the most part though things should run smoothly for Penn State who is expecting everyone to stay true to their verbal commitments.

Anything can and often does happen though, so stay tuned to StateCollege.com as we let you know who has sent in their faxes. By the end of the day all 19 prospects should be listed below heading into Penn State's first annual Signature Event. The event will feature head coach James Franklin speaking about all of the recruits as well as guest speakers and former Nittany Lions Michael Mauti and LaVar Arrington.
