Penn State Football: Mayock Sees Barkley As Top 5 Pick

In a league dominated by quarterback play a question has always lingered behind Saquon Barkley's standout career.

When will he get drafted?

For most it's matter of what any given team might need in those opening five to 10 picks. Barkley for all of his skill, can't play offensive tackle, and that might just be what your favorite team needs.

However it is undeniable that Barkley is perhaps the most talented player in the draft when it comes to the kind of play that you don't see all that often. And according to NFL Draft analyst Mike Mayock, that's good enough for him.

“I would be absolutely stunned if this kid doesn’t go in the top 5,” Mayock said during a draft conference call Monday afternoon.

To Mayock, Barkley is the quintessential franchise running back that mirrors the game changing abilities of recently drafted stars like Ezekiel Elliott and Lenonard Fournette. Get him on your roster and your team becomes instantly better.

“They all helped their teams become better,” he added, “and I can make the case that this kid Barkley is the best of those guys, the best of all of them.”

Barkley will begin the next leg of his NFL journey this week at the NFL Combine. Running backs are scheduled to work out on Friday but even before then Barkley will be leaving an impression on GMs, coaches and scouts as he goes through the interview process. For as much talent as Barkley has on the field, he's nearly as impressive off of it.

So really, this week, maybe the biggest of his life, it should be easy.

“For him, it ought to be a victory celebration,” Mayock said. “He ought to go in, knock it down one drill after another, and he’s going to walk out of there four days later and everyone’s going to go, ‘Wow, he’s just as good or better than we thought he was.’”

And on Thursday, April 26, everyone will find out exactly how high Barkley will go.
