Penn State Football: Mike Gesicki Named To Mackey Award Midseason Watch List

by on October 12, 2016 12:50 PM

Penn State junior tight end Mike Gesicki may not have a game to play this weekend but he still managed to pick up a win, getting named to the Mackey Award Midseason watch list. The award is given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end. The award is named after NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey, who is considered to be the best to have played the tight end position.

So far this season Gesicki has career highs of 23 catches, 277 yards and two touchdowns this season. He is tied for first in the Big Ten and fifth in the country in receptions by a tight end. His 277 yards are the most by a Big Ten tight end and are seventh in FBS for a tight end. He is ranked sixth by Pro Football Focus in pass blocking efficiency with a 98.6 percent mark on the season.

The so far successful 2016 campaign comes a year after a 2015 season full of potential and "what if" moments as Gesicki struggled with drops.

“If I’m completely honest, I’m not worried about the past anymore," Gesicki said this past spring. "I’m not thinking about the past anymore. I’m excited for the future, excited for this new offense and excited for the team to continue to mature. I’m going to continue to improve day-in and day-out, and I think these new two years under Coach Moorhead and this offense will be very exciting and very fun to play in.”

And that mentality seems to be working out just fine for one of Penn State's most consistent offensive weapons.
