Penn State Football: Minor But Important Change Coming To Blue White Game

by on April 13, 2017 11:00 AM

You might not see all of your favorite Nittany Lions play next weekend at the annual Blue White game but you will see a much more competitive scrimmage according to James Franklin.

"In the past it really has been 1s and 2s vs. 3s and 4s on another team, that kind of deal," Franklin said after practice on Wednesday "I'm really kind of hoping to go 1s vs 2s."

During previous years that hasn't always been possible. NCAA scholarship restrictions had greatly impacted the depth and quality of Penn State's roster, in turn the ability to create quality teams to scrimmage against.

With Penn State now in its second year back at 85 scholarship players, the Nittany Lions are a much deeper and much more talented team across the board, as a result, Franklin and his staff can spread the wealth around a bit more next Saturday. The game might not really matter much, but as the 15th and final practice of the spring, getting the most out of it is still an important part of the development process for the entire team.

"I think we've always wanted to do that to make it a better game so you have a better evaluation," Franklin added. "On Friday we're going to practice in the stadium because I don't ever like to wait until the Blue White game or during the season, I don't ever like to wait until the first game of the year to go into the stadium, it's amazing just being in there some guys don't handle it as well. We'll do that next week, just to make it more competitive."

"For it to be a true evaluation for us, that's what we do that in practice all the time, good vs good, and we want to be able to do that in the spring game as well."

In the end nobody really remembers much of anything that happens during the game, but that doesn't mean the chance isn't there for players farther down the roster to get a chance to showcase their talents. While Franklin hasn't indicated who will and will not play, history suggests that the likes of Saquon Barkley, Mike Gesicki and even Trace McSorley will see limited snaps.

In turn that might mean a lot more Miles Sanders, Tom Pancoast and Tommy Stevens in the mix and with it, a glimpse into the future.
