Penn State Football: More Behind The Scenes Changes As 2019 Season Rolls Into View

by on August 06, 2019 1:22 PM

Penn State football added to a handful of offseason changes within Penn State athletics as a longtime James Franklin staffer moved on.

"Jemal Griffin who has been with me since day one, been a friend," James Franklin said earlier this week. "Jemal was a head high school coach at Woodlawn High School in Maryland when I was at the University of Maryland and came on and has been with me ever since. Done a great job as chief of staff for us."

"Jemal has been fortunate to be able to get a job and is going to be leaving to go to St. Thomas University in Minnesota as a senior associate athletic director. This was a goal and objective of his to get into administration and couldn't be happier for him and his family and Kevin Threlkel has been promoted into his position."

Griffin's departure to St. Thomas University means he will join former Penn State deputy athletic directory Phil Esten who was recently named director of athletics at his alma mater. While at Penn State, Esten was the primary day-to-day contact between the football program and the rest of the athletic administration and department.

Scott Sidwell enters his his first year in Esten's prior role. Former Penn State associate athletic director Cory Chapman left for a similar position as Senior Associate Athletics Director at St Thomas earlier this summer.

As for Threikel, who has known Franklin since roughly 2006-07, the former director of football operations will now handle daily internal operations, team travel logistics, preseason camp and serves as the team’s liaison to the Nittany Lion Club, Penn State Alumni Association and the Penn State Football Letterman’s Club.
