Penn State Football: NFL.Com Lists Trace McSorley As No. 5 Potential 2017 Heisman Candidate

The assumption has alway been that Penn State running back Saquon Barkley would be the first player in quite some time to have a legitimate shot at wining the coveted Heisman trophy.

But what about Trace McSorley?

That's what NFL.com is banking on as the site released its top 10 early candidates for the award in 2017. McSorley came in at No. 5 on the list as Penn State's quarterback continues his explosion up the ranks of the sports's elite.

In the past two games alone McSorley has thrown for nearly 800 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions while completing over 70 percent of his passes and averaging 19.4 yards per completion.

Interestingly enough USC freshman quarterback Sam Darnold comes in just above McSorley on the list. The two quarterbacks face off in this year's Rose Bowl on Jan. 2.

McSorley currently ranks No. 13 in the nation for passing yards and 25th in touchdowns, but more impressively is second nationally in passes of 40+ yards and third in passes of 20 and 30+ yards.

With one game left to play McSorley needs 288 yards of offense to become the first Penn State player ever to record 4,000 in a season.
